Education in Hong Kong Scope and Possibilities
The education system in Hong Kong is similar to the British model of education. The Education Bureau and Social Welfare Department are competent authorities designated by the Government of Hong Kong to look after the education system of the country. Children are required to go school as soon as they attain 6 years of age. A minimum of 12 years education is compulsory. The literacy rate in Hong Kong is impressive ~ >96%. In the year 2012-13 the government's spending on education was HK$39,420 per capita. Language of instruction is English and Cantonese. Pre School Education in Hong Kong
Also called Kindergarten, Pre School education is delivered by Nursery Schools. Enrollment in pre schools open for 2 year old children. Normally children leave Kindergarten at 6 year’s of age.
Primary Education in Hong Kong
A child born in Hong Kong must require to enroll for primary school education at the age of 6. The classes are delivered by Primary Schools or Junior Schools. The duration of primary education is 6 years.
Secondary Education in Hong Kong
Secondary Education is distributed over 2 segments; 3 years of secondary education and 3 years of Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE). However, some students take 4 years of secondary education and then chose for 2 years of A levels / International Baccalaureate (IB) qualification. Other alternative route available at secondary education level is; 3 years of secondary classes followed by 2 years of GCSE / IGCSE and 3 years of A levels / International Baccalaureate (IB) programme.
Higher Education in Hong Kong
Any qualification above secondary education comes under higher education in Hong Kong. There are many universities funded by government, private institutions and colleges and institutes of higher education. Students can obtain an academic degree, a technical or professional qualification. See here
